Interview with Liz-Hume Dawson
By Ricky, Editor-in-Chief
DGSChapter interviewed Liz-Hume Dawson, an actress portraying Dane’s Mum in BBC sitcom, ‘Sunny D’. We asked her questions about her acting career.
What inspired you to become an actress?
I did amateur dramatics and went on a NODA week course. A drama teacher told me that I should go to drama school. Therefore, I went and did BTEC performing arts, A level drama as well as GCSE dance all as a mature student. I then auditioned for drama school and I chose Capitol Theatre (now known as Manchester).
What has been your favourite role on television?
I love Dotty Sandy in Bodies and loved my part in Sunny D. It was so much fun!
What actors/actresses are you inspired by?
Where do I start; I’ve had so many. I have had the privilege of working with Victoria Wood, who wrote Starred In and did the warm up before we recorded in front of a studio audience. She also wrote good luck cards for the cast and baked cakes! What a lady! I also admire Adrian Lester and Anthony Sher; he wrote Year of the King which is a must-read for actors. I saw him at the Barbican many years ago. Just mind blowing!
What has been your dream role on television?
Well, I have played about nine nurses. I get cast as nurses a lot. I’m not sure I have had my dream role. Sunny D was challenging, fun, and hard work. So, let me think on that question.
What has been your favourite part of filming Sunny D?
Sunny D is like the 4 O’Clock Club but for adults. There are lots of dream sequences and I get the opportunity to dress up in many different roles. I know a lot of people who say this, but it really was a fantastic cast to work with!
What advice would you give to aspiring actors?
I had a passion for theatre and the arts. Also, try to see as many theatre productions and films as you can. I went to The Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which is the largest arts festival in the world! Once I went there for a week, and saw 2 shows a day!
