The Premier League Top Six Predictability

The Premier League top six is becoming more predictable every year due to the budget gulf between the top six and the rest of the league. The six most common teams at the top of the league are becoming all too predictable and could potentially lead to the end of Premier League unpredictability.

  1. Manchester City
  2. Manchester United
  3. Liverpool
  4. Tottenham
  5. Chelsea
  6. Arsenal

These teams have the biggest transfer and wage budget so they are most likely to get great players to conquer the rest of the league. This is unfair on the other teams because they have to rely on any good players in your youth systems which can take up to a decade to produce. This is such an advantage, because any player can be recruited by the big six to bolster their squad. Apart from the incredible season when Leicester won the Premier League in 2015/16 and the occasional poor performance from a top six team there has been very little interference from the top six in the last 20 years.

Other smaller teams simply do not have the funds to compete with the big six and are forced to focus on developing players through their youth academies rather than searching for a player around the world, which can potentially improve England’s chances at future tournaments but the difference in funding and methods does nothing to improve the Premier League unpredictability factor.

Despite the fact that any PL team can beat any other on their day, the predictability of the league due to the dominant top six is strangling the rest of the division and does nothing to improve the standing of the league, and in the worst possible circumstances, could lead to the downfall of the league…
