The Fiorentina captain and Italian international defender died following a reported ‘sudden illness’ which was confirmed on Fiorentina’s official Twitter feed. Davide Astori, who was capped by Italy 14 times, transferred from current Serie A side Cagliari to Fiorentina in 2016 and has won 58 caps since then.
Astori had made 379 appearances in his club career, playing in elite competitions like the Champions League, Europa League and in Serie A. The left-footed centre-half was born in San Giovanni Bianco in the Italian region of Lombardy. He made his debut for Cagliari in Serie A on 14th September 2008 against Robur Siena and lost 2-0 under current Juventus manager, Massimiliano Allegri at the young age of 21.
Gianluigi Buffon, current Juventus captain and former Italy legend, paid tribute to his national teammate by stating: “You have a young wife and family members who are suffering. Your little girl deserves to know that her father was in all respects a perfect person. You were the best expression of an ancient, surpassed world, in which values such as altruism, elegance, education and respect for others, were the masters. You were one of the best sports figures I came across.”
