If you thought 2017 was a big year for movies, you are mistaken as 2018 looks to take the crown, with movies such as Avengers: Infinity War, Tomb Raider and Solo: A Star Wars Story, we’re already buzzing thinking about it.
No.10 Kicking our list off is J.K’s Rowling’s sequel to 2016’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is The Crimes of Grindelward. With familiar faces returning such as Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, Katherine Waterston as Porpentina Goldstein and Johnny Depp as the film’s antagonist Gellert Grindelward. Jude Law plays a young Albus Dumbledore and the film will focus on the history and battles between Dumbledore and Grindelward.
No.9 Tomb Raider. Taking the mantle of Tomb Raider from Angelina Jolie is Alicia Vikander, this Tomb Raider movie gained a lot of attention from its trailer online. The movie seems to serve as an origin story, Lara Croft inherits her presumed dead father’s wealth and goes on a journey to find out the truth and ends up having the fate of humanity resting in her hands.
No.8 Black Panther. It was impossible at least one Marvel movie wasn’t going to make this list. After King T’Challa’s awesome debut in Civil War, fans are excited to find out more about the character and his homeland Wakanda. Played by Chadwick Boseman, Black Panther returns to his homeland after his father’s death and faces conflict from the outside world and inside. The bad guy seems to be Erik Killmonger who is played by Michael B. Jordan, from the trailers it looks to be a different kind of Marvel movie but definitely a good one.
No.7 A Wrinkle in Time. A Wrinkle in Time looks to be Disney’s big hitter this year based on a book of the same title written by Madeleine L’Engle, published in 1962. It is about Meg Murry who with her little brother Charles have been without their father for 5 years, ever since he discovered a new planet and travelled there. Joined by their classmate, Calvin O’Keefe they are accompanied by 3 travellers across a strange new world. Oprah Winfrey, Chris Pine are some of the stars appearing in this movie.
No.6. Solo: A Star Wars Story. Say ‘New Star Wars’ and you have immediately got people’s attention. Who doesn’t want a movie about Han Solo, everyone’s favourite scruffy-looking nerf herder? Han Solo is one of the most beloved and ionic characters in Star Wars and in pop culture as a whole. The world is still missing a trailer and there has been news of switching directors but that seems to fuel our excitement more. Alden Ehrenreich plays Solo, Emilia Clarke plays Kira, Donald Glover plays Lando Calrissian with Woody Harrelson plays Beckett. There isn’t a lot of story or character details but we do know that it will serve as an origin story, set before A New Hope. Also, there is a confirmed Chewbacca and rumours circulating the infamous Boba Fett making an appearance.
No.5 Ready Player One. Directed by Steven Spielberg comes the adaptation of Ernest Cline’s bestseller of the same name. It is set in the dystopian future of 2045, however people have found joy in the OASIS which is a huge expansive virtual reality. The creator, James Halliday dies and leaves an easter egg in the game and whoever finds it gets his fortune. This sparks the whole world, but when Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) joins he is thrown into a crazy action adventure. Olivia Cook star alongside Ben Mendelsohn, T.J. Miller and Simon Pegg.
No.4 The Incredibles 2. With only a 30 second teaser trailer and rumours, the Incredibles 2 hasn’t had a lot of light shed on the matter but it’s the Incredibles one of the most beloved Pixar/Disney films ever. What more do I have to say? We do know that it is directed by Brad Bird.
No.3 Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Another sequel of a 2016 movie, it is set 4 years after the destruction of the theme park. Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) and Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) return to the Isla Nublar to help the remaining dinosaurs due to the volcanic eruption however they find out about a new breed of dinosaur whilst discovering a conspiracy that puts the world in danger. Directed by J.A Bayona, Justice Smith plays a new character and Toby Jones plays Wheaton. Oh yeah, Jeff Goldblum returns as Ian Malcolm.
No.2 Deadpool 2. Deadpool proved you could make an R-rated superhero movie and make it one of the best superhero movies ever. With a few trailers and clips, Deadpool is toying with us for a story trailer. Ryan Reynolds returns as the Merc with the Mouth, alongside Josh Brolin as Cable. Brianna Hildebrand plays Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Stefan Kapicic plays Colossus. Morena Baccarin as Copycat and Zazie Beetz as Domino. This is going to be a good one.
No.1 Avengers: Infinity War. No surprise. This is the movie that Marvel has been building up to for just over a decade, directed by the Russo brothers it includes almost every main Marvel character ever. The Avengers, Spider-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy unite to battle Thanos who is on a quest to find the Infinity Stones and inflict his twisted thoughts on the Universe. This time not everyone is getting out alive. Robert Downey Jr plays Iron Man, Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Chris Evans as Captain America, Josh Brolin plays Thanos. Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Tom Holland as Spider-Man and the list goes on. I like the rest of you cannot wait for this to come sooner.
