Should sports be banned in schools?

Hello there, reader! Today I will be talking about the controversial statement that sports should be banned in schools due to the possibility of the students becoming too competitive. As a rugby player myself, I strongly disagree with this statement, I think that sports is something that people can learn a lot from. Sport, itself, can be a way to earn money. There are many people who have heavily gained from sport. One example is Cristiano Ronaldo, an extremely famous footballer that used to live in a shack in Portugal, belonging to an extremely poor family. And as you see him now on television, you see his many Rolls-Royces, Lamborghinis and Bugattis, and you see how much money he has made and how much he has given to charity.

Some people might agree that sport might cause an overdose of competitiveness among the student population of the nation, causing fights on streets, or even inside the school grounds. There have already been cases around the United Kingdom. Winning and/or losing can have an anxious effect on people who play. According to a survey by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and the Chance to Shine charity, almost two thirds (64%) of eight to sixteen year olds said they would be “relieved, not bothered or happier” if winning or losing were not a factor.

But, another slice of the population think that sport is good for the country’s children. It helps maintain physical health among students, and, according to scientific research, exercise increases endorphine and dopamine levels in the body, which leaves students feeling happy and relieved. Furthermore, competitiveness can also transfer to the classroom, which can develop work quality due to students competing to be the greatest at the work they are given to do. Healthy competition inspires kids to do their best – not just good enough. It can also help them to research and work independently, and even in teams.

In a world of electronics and gadgets, physical exercise and physical activity is decreasing as more and more people are spending all of their time on their phones, computers and televisions. Exercise is something that we all need, it is something that we should enjoy and one of the ways to get exercise is sport! What better way to enjoy sports is there than playing with friends at school!

In conclusion, my opinion is that sports should never be banned in schools. Sport brings us together, and it helps us learn. I think that sports is a daily part of our lives, and we should acknowledge that.
