5 things in the Minecraft 1.20 update

The new Minecraft update, Trails and Tales, has finally been released! 1.20 is expected to make up for the controversial 1.19 update, in which many players were unhappy with the new player-banning system and many cancelled features. So, here are some confirmed features that Microsoft will add in this update. Sorry firefly fans - it’s not happening yet!

  1. Cherry Blossom Biome

That’s right - a new biome is coming to Minecraft. Inside this biome are beautiful cherry blossom trees, which bring a unique look to the horizon with their big, fluffy leaves. This cherry tree can be broken down into a full wood set, and will definitely be a popular building block. The biome will house pigs, sheep and bees, who definitely love the colour. They can also be crafted into hanging signs, which are next on our list.

2. Hanging Signs

Minecraft players have exciting news to look forward to – new hanging signs are coming to the game! These signs can be crafted with six wood planks and two chains, and can be hung on walls or from ceilings, allowing for greater customization for builds. The signs come in a variety of colours and can be decorated with glow ink, just like the normal signs. Whether players want to add more detail to their homes or create unique markers for their towns, these new hanging signs are sure to add even more creativity and fun to the Minecraft experience.

3. Archaeology

At last, the long-awaited update. First announced by Dinnerbone in 2020, this update will add brushes, designed for the new suspicious sand and gravel blocks, which when interacted with a brush, will gently sweep away to reveal anything to pottery shards (also coming to 1.20) to emeralds and the new sniffer egg. The main places to find suspicious blocks are in desert wells and temples. Pottery shards can also be crafted together to make pots. Also in the Archaeology update are trail ruins, huge, underground structures with many rooms.

4. The Sniffer

This dinosaur-like animal can be found in suspicious sand and ocean monuments, in the form of an ancient egg. When hatched, it will take the form of a snifflet, which will then grow into its massive adult form. With only 7 hearts and being incapable of regeneration, this mob shows that size isn't everything. Where the sniffer really comes into play, however, is its ability to sniff two new exclusive seeds out of the ground. These are the Pitcher Plants and the Torchflower Seeds, the latter of which is used to breed Sniffers.

5. Armour Trims

After years of using plain-looking armour, Minecraft 1.20 is finally bringing armour customization to the game. For each piece of your armour, you get 16 pattern designs in 10 unique colours. Considering the various types of armour in Minecraft and how you can mix and match items, you can easily get dozens of styles for your armour selection. Once you find the trim, you have to combine it with your armour and the colour in the new Smithing Table UI. While the custom designs look amazing, the purpose of armour trimming is only aesthetic. For example, using gold trim on your armour doesn’t make it Piglin-friendly. Still, uniquely designed armour will be a big hit in the best PvP Minecraft servers as team uniforms.
