Inspirational Dartford students join volunteer army of key workers fighting impacts of COVID-19

Young people across the world are standing united to support their communities at this time of global uncertainty.

Meet Puran Thumber, a Year 12 student at Dartford Grammar School who has been volunteering since the national lockdown to support our community by cooking food for those in need, alongside other young volunteers.

Inspired by the Sikh philosophy seva (meaning selfless service), Puran wanted to help his local community and is giving up his spare time to cook and prepare meals for those in need, while balancing his studies.

Puran, who currently studies the IB Diploma Programme, said: “We from the Sikh community have been working to feed the front line at Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Lewisham Hospital, by cooking over 200 meals a day at Woolwich Gurdwara. I found the opportunity to help cook and prepare the meals once a week very enjoyable and it’s a humbling and rewarding experience to feed that many staff. It’s all been managed by South London Sikh Youth, and we are very grateful for everyone’s donations and help with this endeavour.”

Supported by Gurdwara Sahib Greenwich, the South London Sikh Youth group has been the central hub for the Sikh community, encouraging young people to join to learn about their religion through holding annual camps, talks and weekly programs. They are welcoming new volunteers to join their efforts in supporting their efforts against COVID-19. To find out more about how to support the group, click here.
