Enterprising Science Workshop
Thirty-one Year 10 students were invited to participate in the Enterprising Science Workshop to find out more about science as a career path as well as to appreciate how science impacts our lives.
The workshop was led by Mrs Sandra Matthews and supported by Mr Grazebrook. The students took part in various activities including a team activity that involved essential employability skills such as time management, market research and innovation. Five teams competed to win a prize by constructing their own towers out of pipe cleaner, with one team achieving the impressive height of 74 cm high, solely using just 15 pipe cleaners. There were additional activities relating to calculating finances, as well as designing packaging for a mock employability test.
This was followed by discussing jobs in science: you could be a marine biologist, quantum physicist, doctor. However, we also discussed how science is so prevalent in our modern-day society including jobs such as food testing, quality assurance managers and necessary for our most basic provisions such as toothpaste.
We concluded the day by watching some videos on how you do not need a degree for a job in Science, you could instead get an internship or an apprenticeship – we learned that there are numerous career paths available from science. We must thank Mrs Sandra Matthews and Mr Grazebrook for providing us with the experience.
Mr C. Grazebrook, Teacher of Science, commented: “I was very impressed by the focus, attention to detail and innovative design that the winning team employed in designing their tower and completing the other tasks.”
