Ashford holds grand celebration of talent in Kent
Talent, excellence and dedication from Kent’s young people were recognised at the Spirit of Try Angle Awards 2018 celebration evening held at the Ashford International Hotel.
There were three finalists from each of the eight categories which included Arts, Community action, Courage, Good friends and young carers, Music, Personal development, Personal intervention and Sports. The hall was packed, full of family, friends and various dignitaries for support.
With over 84 district winners across Kent, it was difficult for the judges to pick the 24 county finalists. All nominees of the Try Angle Award received the nomination certificate, before being notified whether they had reached the district round.
Owen Barnett was the winner of the Personal Achievement in Music award. He studies at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, regularly competing with composers across the globe.
Reflecting on an inspirational evening, he commented: “The day was so exciting, hearing the inspiring stories behind the young people in each category. I’m so happy to have had my musical achievements recognised along with the other finalists”
I attended, also representing the Dartford Youth Council as their Secretary and Youth Councillor. Personally, it was extremely inspirational to see the often unrecognised hard work within our community, at a time where young people are often portrayed in a negative manner.
The overall winner of the Spirit of Try Angle Award was Archie Mitchell: a dedicated volunteer, raising money to fund a defibrillator in his community as well as other great deeds.
